 Expedition Borneo: Sea Nomads, Jungles & Reefs

Route: Tawau - Sipadan  - Kinabatangan River - Kudat

Itinerary

 WEEK 1: Sipadan & The Coral Kingdom

Base: Semporna, Mabul, Kapalai, Sipadan

  • Daily Dives: Explore the world-famous reefs of Sipadan – dramatic wall dives, tornadoes of barracuda, turtles galore.

  • Overnights: Anchor off Mabul & Kapalai – chill island vibes with great night dives.

  • Film/Content Focus: Marine biodiversity, reef conservation, coral life.

  • Local Collaboration: Partner with park rangers & marine NGOs to gain insight into conservation challenges.

Optional: Dive briefings with marine biologists or local dive shop advocates.

 WEEK 2: The Bajau Laut – Sea Nomads of Semporna

Base: Tun Sakaran Marine Park – Bodgaya, Maiga, Sibuan

  • Cultural Focus: Meet the Bajau Laut, “Sea Gypsies” who live on boats or stilt homes over turquoise water.

  • Activities:

    • Join freediving and spearfishing excursions with Bajau youth.

    • Document traditional boatbuilding or fishing techniques.

    • Share stories of statelessness, education access, and ocean stewardship.

Film/Content Focus: Human-ocean connection, cultural resilience, underwater life as a lifestyle.

 WEEK 3: Kinabatangan River – Into the Wild

Route: Sail to Sandakan, then inland via riverboats

  • Wildlife Encounters:

    • Pygmy elephants

    • Proboscis monkeys

    • Orangutans in the wild

    • Crocodiles, hornbills, and macaques

  • Eco-Stay: Anchor near the river mouth and partner with a local eco-lodge (e.g., Sukau or Abai village).

  • Activities: River safaris, night jungle walks, drone footage of rainforest canopies.

Film/Content Focus: Borneo's rainforest biodiversity, conservation efforts, intersection of land and sea.

 

WEEK 4: Coastal Villages to Kudat – Tip of Borneo

Route: Lahad Datu ➝ Dent Haven Coast ➝ Banggi Island ➝ Kudat

  • Sailing Highlights:

    • A couple final days in the river.

    • Meet local fishing communities

    • Visit Banggi Island, Malaysia’s largest island

  • Cultural Stop: Rungus Longhouses near Kudat – experience music, crafts, and life in Sabah’s north.

  • Finale: Arrive at Simpang Mengayau, the majestic Tip of Borneo where the South China Sea meets the Sulu Sea.

  • Wrap Party: Sunset feast on deck with tribal drumming or beach BBQ.

Film/Content Focus: Remote maritime communities, closing reflection on the journey and ocean connection.
